Things That Will Ruin Your Car’s Leather Seats

You didn’t invest in automobile leather seats only to have them ruined. Unfortunately, there are many things that can damage your leather seats and leave you with the need for our re-upholstering services. To help you avoid them, Banister’s Upholstery is going to list the things that ruin leather car seats below.

Food/Drinks

It’s a good idea to avoid eating and drinking in your automobile if you have leather upholstery. Food and drinks that are spilled onto the upholstery can ruin it. This is especially true if you spill something acidic like coffee or dribble ketchup on the seats.

Heat/Sun

Another thing that will damage your leather upholstery is excessive heat and the sun’s UV rays. It’s important to use a car cover when you have leather upholstery in your automobile. This prevents the sun from beating down on the upholstery while the car is parked and fading it.

Ink

Perhaps you are old-fashioned and still read a paper newspaper. Maybe you have your briefcase opened. Don’t toss these things on your car seats because the ink can ruin the upholstery. The ink from the newspaper can rub off onto your car upholstery and if you have pens in your briefcase, they can leak all over the upholstery.

Dirt/Dust

Keeping your leather car seats clean is important. Dirt and dust can scratch the seats and ruin the upholstery. If you drive with your windows down, you also run the risk of getting road grime all over the upholstery and this can include oil that will stain the seats.

Wrong Cleaners

Cleaning your seats however must be done with the right cleaners. Using harsh chemical cleaners on your leather upholstery is the quickest way to damage it. Rather, use the leather cleaner that is recommended by the upholstery manufacturer and make sure to treat the leather on a regular basis, as well.

Pets

If your dog loves to ride in the car with you, make sure to keep its claws trimmed so that it cannot dig into your leather upholstery. The safest way for your dog to ride with you is in a crate that is buckled in. If you need to take your cat to the vet, make sure it is in its crate, as well, to avoid it from tearing up your leather upholstery while it panics.
